My son, who has autism, attended his first school dance last week. I was so excited for him, but I was also a little nervous. I wasn’t sure how he would handle the noise, the crowds, and the bright lights.

We arrived at the dance early, so he could get a chance to experience it before things got too busy. He seemed to enjoy the music and the decorations. He even danced a little bit.

After about 40 minutes, the room started to get crowded and noisy. I could tell that my son was getting overstimulated. We decided to leave early, but he still had a great time.

I’m so glad that we were able to attend the dance. It was a great opportunity for him to experience something new and to socialize with his classmates. It also taught me that with autism, he doesn’t have to miss out on things that other kids do. We just have to do them on a different schedule that best meets his needs.
